WVHS

Veterinary Science CDE Contest

Our Veterinary Science Team offers hands-on experience in animal health, diagnostics, and clinical care—ideal for students interested in veterinary medicine, animal science, or pre-vet pathways.

What You’ll Do:
  • Animal Handling & Restraint: Safely manage a variety of species (small and large animals) using proper techniques.
  • Clinical Procedures: Practice physical exams, vaccinations, bandaging, and basic surgical prep in our on-campus veterinary hospital.
  • Diagnostics & Lab Work: Perform fecal exams, urinalysis, and blood tests, then interpret results to inform treatment plans.
  • Equipment Use & Maintenance: Learn to operate and care for veterinary tools and instruments.

Competition Levels:
  1. Chapter: Select your team and begin mock labs, identifications, and case study reviews.
  2. Sectional & Regional: Compete in timed stations, written tests, and practical demonstrations against other schools.
  3. State Finals: Showcase your clinical knowledge and diagnostic skills at Cal Poly SLO, representing West Valley at the highest level.

Skills You’ll Gain:
  • Proficiency in animal handling, safety, and welfare standards
  • Competence in common veterinary procedures and lab diagnostics
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving in real-time clinical scenarios
  • Team collaboration, time management, and professional communication
