The Grapevine Pruning CDE develops your practical skills in vine training systems and pruning techniques critical to grape production. This event is ideal for students interested in viticulture, production agriculture, or hands-on fieldwork.

- Pruning Techniques: Practice cane and spur pruning on live vines, adjusting for bud count, spacing, and balance.
- Tool Use & Safety: Learn to handle pruning shears and loppers safely and efficiently.
- Vine Structure Identification: Recognize key parts of the vine, including cordons, canes, shoots, and buds.
- Field Evaluation: Apply pruning methods in real-world conditions while being evaluated by industry experts.
Competition Levels:
- Chapter: Get comfortable with tools, vine structure, and basic pruning cuts.
- Sectional & Regional: Compete in timed pruning events judged for accuracy, balance, and technique.
- State Finals: Prune under pressure at Fresno State or another California site, showing your precision and vine knowledge.
