Grapevine Judging

WVHS

Grapevine Judging CDE Contest

The Grapevine Judging CDE challenges students to evaluate the health, structure, and productivity of grapevines used in viticulture. You'll develop a strong foundation in plant science, pest management, and vineyard evaluation—perfect for future careers in agriculture, viticulture, and crop consulting.

What You’ll Do:
  • Vine Evaluation: Assess grapevines based on uniformity, cane development, node spacing, and overall vine balance.
  • Pest & Disease Identification: Spot signs of common vineyard issues such as mildew, mites, and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Viticulture Knowledge: Learn how climate, soil, and pruning affect grape yield and quality.
  • Judging Format: Participate in written exams, visual assessments, and oral presentations where you'll defend your rankings.

Competition Levels:
  • Chapter: Practice vine scoring and learn evaluation techniques as you prepare for higher levels.
  • Sectional & Regional: Test your knowledge in live judging rounds and written exams.
  • State Finals: Represent West Valley at Fresno State or a designated site, showcasing your vineyard evaluation skills.

Skills You’ll Gain:
  • Critical thinking and observation in live vineyard conditions
  • Viticulture terminology and vineyard management insight
  • Communication skills through oral presentations and team collaboration
  • Exposure to careers in viticulture, ag science, and plant health management
