Career Development Events (CDE)

California FFA offers 31 Career Development Events (CDEs), 7 Leadership Development Events (LDEs), and 3 specialized skill activities that help students build job-ready abilities—from agribusiness and communications to machinery operation and plant health.

Career Development Events test technical knowledge and practical problem-solving in areas like Nursery/Landscape, Veterinary Science, Livestock Evaluation, Ag Mechanics, and Ag Sales. Leadership Development Events hone public speaking, teamwork, and organizational skills through competitions such as Creed Speaking, Parliamentary Procedure, and Job Interview. The three skill-focused activities provide hands-on experience in workplace tasks like welding, computer applications, and safety inspections.

Some contests are individual, letting members shine independently; others are team-based, encouraging collaboration and strategic planning. Students progress from sectional to regional and state levels, gaining confidence, networking with industry professionals, and earning recognition and scholarships—all while applying classroom learning to real-world challenges.

Leadership Development Events (LDE)

Leadership Development Events (LDEs) help students strengthen their public speaking, critical thinking, and personal leadership skills through real-world practice. Whether you're giving a speech, participating in a mock meeting, or preparing for a job interview, these contests build confidence and communication abilities that last a lifetime.

In California, there are seven official LDE contests that allow FFA members to compete as individuals or teams. LDEs are designed to reflect the leadership roles and skills used in agricultural education, business, and beyond. These experiences not only prepare students for college and careers but also help them grow into the next generation of confident, capable leaders.
