Course: Agriculture Mechanics
The Agricultural Mechanics Pathway prepares students for careers in the construction, operation, and maintenance of equipment and facilities used throughout the agriculture industry. This hands-on program emphasizes safety, technical skill development, and problem-solving through real-world projects and lab experiences.
In Ag Mechanics 1, students are introduced to core skills such as tool safety, woodworking, basic electrical wiring, plumbing, cold metal work, and concrete. As they progress into Ag Mechanics 2 and 3, students dive deeper into advanced topics like welding technology, metal fabrication, small engine repair, agricultural construction, and the use of modern ag power equipment. Students leave the program with practical, industry-relevant experience and the foundational skills needed to pursue careers in agricultural engineering, construction, mechanics, and skilled trades. Certifications and competitive FFA events in ag mechanics provide additional opportunities for students to grow professionally and stand out in the field. |

Course: Plant & Soil Science
|
The Plant & Soil Science course introduces students to the fundamentals of plant biology, soil science, and sustainable agricultural practices. Through hands-on labs and greenhouse work, students explore plant anatomy, physiology, growth cycles, soil composition, nutrient management, and pest control.
This course blends scientific principles with real-world agricultural applications, giving students the opportunity to grow and care for plants while learning how healthy soil contributes to food production and environmental health. Students gain practical skills for careers in horticulture, agronomy, greenhouse management, and environmental science, while also building a strong foundation for further agricultural education. Viticulture focuses on the science, care, and management of grapevines, one of California’s most iconic and economically important crops. Students learn about vineyard design, soil preparation, irrigation systems, pruning techniques, pest and disease control, and the overall grape production process. At West Valley, students gain real-world experience working in our on-campus, 1-acre vineyard, developed in partnership with Doffo Winery in Temecula, CA. This unique program gives students the opportunity to contribute directly to commercial wine grape production, preparing them for future careers in viticulture, plant science, and ag business. The course also highlights how viticulture connects with California’s agricultural heritage and innovation. |

Course: Animal Science
Animal Science introduces students to the world of animal agriculture through the study of animal anatomy, physiology, nutrition, genetics, and behavior. Students explore the care and management of livestock species such as cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and poultry, along with discussions on companion animals and the livestock industry’s role in feeding the world.
This course combines scientific knowledge with hands-on experiences, including animal handling, health assessments, and breed identification. Students build a strong foundation for future careers in animal production, veterinary medicine, livestock management, and agricultural education. Leadership opportunities and competitions like livestock judging further enhance student growth and engagement. Veterinary Science is a specialized course for students interested in animal health, medicine, and careers in the veterinary or animal care fields. Students explore animal body systems, disease prevention, clinical procedures, and veterinary terminology, while also practicing hands-on skills like restraint techniques, physical exams, and first aid. What makes this class unique is our on-campus veterinary hospital, where students gain real-world experience in a clinical setting. Whether students want to become veterinarians, vet techs, or work in animal care, this course provides a solid introduction to the profession, as well as opportunities for certification and career readiness. |
